Policy briefs updated

September 24, 2023

On 19 September 2023 the Government published its proposed Government Plan 2024-2027 and ministerial plans for 2024. The Centre's Policy Briefs draw heavily on these documents. Accordingly, all the Policy Briefs have been updated, incorporating relevant information from the two documents. The Briefs will continue to be updated as new information becomes available.

Note of Policy Centre Jersey discussion meeting on healthcare, 11 July 2023

July 17, 2023

On 11 July 2023 the Policy Centre held a discussion meeting on the challenges in providing an effective healthcare service in Jersey. Professor Hugo Mascie-Taylor, author of the Review of Health and Community Services Clinical Governance Arrangements within Secondary Care and interim Chair of the Health and Care Board, opened the discussion. Rosemarie Finley, Chief Executive of Family Nursing and Home Care, and James Le Feuvre, Chair of the Jersey Health and Care Partnership Group, commented on the presentation and added their thoughts following which there was an open discussion. 28 people attended the meeting – members of the Council’s Advisory Committee and invited guests from the charity sector and the States Assembly.

Advisory Council meeting, 29 June 2023

July 4, 2023

The first meeting of the Policy Centre’s Advisory Council was held at the Prosperity 24/7 offices on Tuesday 29 June 2023. 20 members of the Council attended. The Council had a wide-ranging discussion on issues that the Centre should concentrate on. Three major priorities were identified - housing, poverty and the consequences of the ageing society.

Jersey’s new think tank, the Policy Centre Jersey, has today launched its Supporter Scheme.  The Centre has already had a huge impact with 1,000 followers on LinkedIn and a website that has become established as an authoritative source of information about Jersey and current policy issues.

The Policy Centre has launched Academic Centre

June 21, 2023

A key aim of the Centre is to encourage Jersey students who prepare dissertations to do so on Jersey-related subjects. The Centre’s website, including the database of academic papers, is a valuable resource for such research. The Centre may also be able to provide some expert support though members of its Advisory Council and other relevant experts. Students contemplating a Jersey-related subject are invited to contact the Centre.

Election Turnout Meeting Notes

On 7 April 2023 the Policy Centre published a research paper Election turnout in Jersey, written by the Centre’s Research Adviser, Sir Mark Boleat. On 26 May 2023 the Centre held a roundtable discussion on the subject, chaired by the Chair of the Centre’s Advisory Council, Simon Burgess. The roundtable was attended by 30 people – members of the Centre’s Advisory Council, commentators and invited guests. This note summarises the discussion.

New Knowledge Centre Paper on Jersey’s National Anthem

A new paper has been added the Jersey Knowledge Centre - Jersey’s National Anthem. Jersey has no agreed national anthem and the issue of whether there should be one and, if so, what it should be has proved to be politically controversial, reflecting wider issues in the Island. The Government’s website records “Island Home” as the national anthem but this is unknown to most of the population and very few more people would be able to sing the anthem. “Beautiful Jersey” has traditionally had the status of an unofficial anthem while to some people the only anthem is “God Save the King”.
