Academic Centre

Support for studies on Jersey-related subjects

The Centre is keen to encourage Jersey students who prepare dissertations to do so on Jersey-related subjects. This website, including the Links section and the database of academic papers, is a valuable resource for such research. The Centre may also be able to provide some expert support though members of its Advisory Council and other relevant experts. Students contemplating a Jersey-related subject are invited to contact the Centre at research@policy.je.

Island Studies

Island Research Repository

The Island Research Repository (IRR) is an informal collective of second and third-sector organisations that have come together to publish Jersey-based research for the benefit of the island community. It is seeking to organise a central repository to support research accessibility, impact and influence and identify those who are currently involved with any aspect of research on the island. Although the IRR aims to collect and collate relevant Jersey-based research for the benefit of the Jersey community, the IRR will also serve as a basis of knowledge for other island nations and small states. The Repository has a document library with a research tool, documents being recorded in six categories: medical health and social care, applied science, social science, formal science, island studies and humanities.

The Small Island Cultures Research Initiative

Facilitates communication and collaboration between researchers and cultural practitioners working with small island communities. Its aim is to research and assist the maintenance and development of the language, literature, music, dance, folkloric and media cultures of small island communities.

Database of academic papers

Many Jersey students produce dissertations as part of a postgraduate degree.  Over the years a number of dissertations have been on Jersey-related issues.  Some university lecturers and professors have also published Jersey-related research.

This page seeks to provide a database of such research relevant to the objectives of the Policy Centre, which in turn should assist those doing research in the future.
‍

The database comprises some PDFs of papers provided to the Centre and links to papers listed on the following databases -
‍

  • Ethos, run by the British Library, which describes itself as “The UK’s national thesis service which aims to maximise the visibility and availability of the UK’s doctoral research theses”.  (Note that registration is required in order to access some of these papers)
  • Ebsco Open Dissertations.
  • Academia has 47 million academic papers.

The database is not a comprehensive list -
‍

  • It covers only papers relevant to the work of the Policy Centre and those which are of significant importance to the history or identity of Jersey.
  • It covers only documents that are available electronically and not papers available only in hard copy form.
  • Where academics have written a number of papers on similar subjects only a few are covered but accessing those papers will generally give links to other papers.

Academics and students who wish to have their papers included in the database are invited to send a PDF or preferably a link to research@policy.je.
