Policy Centre Jersey launches poll to identify the top issues for islanders

The Policy Centre Jersey has commissioned professional research organisation 4insight to conduct an independent poll with islanders on the important issues for them.

The poll asks just two questions –

  • What would you say is the most important issue facing Jersey today? (an open-ended question).
  • What do you see as the other important issues facing Jersey today? (choosing four from a list of issues).

The Government’s Engagement and Information Improvement Report (October 2022) included the following comment –

Having compared Jersey’s current practice with best practice in other jurisdictions an identified gap is polling (i.e. the continuous monitoring of public opinion through mass surveying). Polling would assist Government in understanding public opinion on a broad range of issues in a timely fashion, in turn allowing Government to assess its priorities and how policies might be received.

The Government duly conducted one survey, in January 2024, but has decided not to continue with regular surveys.  This survey showed that economic concerns was the most important issue (34%) followed by housing (21%) and faith in government (12%).

The results of the Policy Centre survey will be compared with results of the 2024 survey and the regular comparable IPSOS Issues Survey in the UK, and disaggregated by age and household type.   It is planned to conduct further polls half-yearly, which besides giving up-to-date information, will enable trends to be charted.

Commenting on the initiative, the Centre’s Senior Adviser, Mark Boleat, said –

It is important to track the perceptions of the people of Jersey on the key issues facing the Island.  This will facilitate a more informed discussion on the issues on which the public expect politicians to concentrate.

To participate in the poll, islanders can use the following link https://4insight.welcomesyourfeedback.net/ppqh5i, or click on the tab on 4insight's homepage of their website www.4insight.info or phone 4insight on 859300.

The poll will be live until Monday 10th February and all islanders are invited to take part and add their opinion.

The Policy Centre will publish the results of the survey at an open meeting on 26 February.
