Discussion meeting on election turnout, 20 June
Voter turnout is a critical issue as Jersey is bottom of the international league table . Turnout in the 2022 election was 42%, but there were huge variations between different groups –
53% of the over 64s. 17% of the under 35s.
40% in rural areas. 18% in urban areas.
41% of owner-occupiers. 16% of tenants.
Surveys show that people don’t vote because they don’t want to, not because it is difficult.
These issues will be discussed at a Policy Centre discussion meeting on the morning of 20 June at the offices of BDO.
The Centre’s Senior Adviser Mark Boleat will summarise the available research, following which comments will be made by -
Constable Karen Shenton Stone, Chair of the States Privileges and Procedures Committee
Kevin Keen OBE, Founder of Leadership Jersey
Cassie Graham, a recent participant in the Jersey Youth Parliament
There will then be an open discussion.
A summary of the discussion will be published on the Centre’s website.
